The Story Behind PawPlay: Why We Tested Our Dog Toys Like Human Baby Products
A few months ago, while watching my Golden Retriever, Muffin, happily chew on a red rubber toy, a alarming realization hit me: What is actually inside this material? Dogs chew on their toys for hours, swallow microscopic pieces, and drool constantly over the surface—yet as pet parents, we simply assume these products are safe. The reality? Many pet toys on the market are manufactured from unverified rubber compounds containing undisclosed additives and industrial chemicals. At PawPlay, we decided to take a definitive stand. Rather than relying on standard "pet grade" guidelines—which are largely non-existent—we submitted our entire rubber toy line to SGS Laboratories for rigorous stress-testing under official EU Children's Toy Standards. Our product philosophy is simple: If a material is not safe enough for a human toddler, it does not belong in your dog’s mouth. Here is a breakdown of our testing metrics and why our rubber formulation achieves exceptional purity standards. 🧪✨
1. REACH SVHC Compliance: 251 Toxic Chemicals Screened
European chemical regulations are among the most stringent in the world. Under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) maintains a Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)—a registry covering carcinogens, heavy metals, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, phthalates (such as DEHP and DBP), and toxic flame retardants (DecaBDE). SGS screened our multi-colored rubber materials against all 251 SVHCs using advanced laboratory analysis.
- Result: PASS
- Concentration: Every tested chemical returned as ND (Not Detected), falling well below the strict 0.1% (w/w) safety threshold. Our toys contain zero heavy metals, plasticizers, or harmful chemical off-gassing.
2. Evaluated Under EU Children's Toy Standards (EN 71 Parts 1, 2, & 3)
We subjected our pet toys to the EN 71 European Standard for Safety of Toys—the exact protocol used for children’s products.
- 🛠️ EN 71-1 (Mechanical & Physical Safety): Verified structural integrity, edge smoothness, and material stability under physical stress. Passed with zero sharp edges, flashing, or points of weakness.
- 🔥 EN 71-2 (Flammability): Tested under EN 71-2:2020 + A1:2025. Our Blue Bone formulation achieved a DN (Did Not Ignite) classification.
- 🧪 EN 71-3 (Migration of Heavy Metals): Evaluates whether toxic compounds leach out if material is swallowed or chewed. SGS tested Category III (scraped-off toy material) for 19 soluble heavy metals and organic tin.
All parameters tested completely clean with zero detected traces.
3. Saliva Fastness: Prevention of Pigment Transfer (DIN 53160-1)
Constant chewing and heavy salivation can cause low-grade pigments to dissolve and transfer synthetic dyes into a dog’s digestive system. We tested our formulation under DIN 53160-Part 1:2010 (Assessment of Color Fastness of Articles for Children's Use to Synthetic Saliva).
- Evaluation Standard: Measured on a 5-point Grey Scale, where 1 indicates severe dye bleeding and 5 indicates zero transfer.
- PawPlay Score: 4–5 Rating
This confirms that even during prolonged chewing sessions, our pigments remain permanently bound within the rubber matrix without leaching.
Uncompromising Safety for Your Dog
Dogs are natural chewers, but playtime shouldn't come with chemical exposure risks. By certifying our products against human toddler safety standards, PawPlay provides complete peace of mind through lab-verified purity and durability.
